Shortly after midnight on 09 February, 1944, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire V.C., D.S.O., D.F.C. led the famous 617 "Dambusters" Squadron raid on the Gnome-Rhone aero engine factory at Limoges, France. Knowing that some 300 French women were working the night shift, Cheshire made three passes at under 100 feet to warn them of the impending destruction. He released his marking flares on the fourth pass, after the buildings were evacuated. The Squadron then unleashed an accurate and devastating ordinance. Nazi engine production was severely reduced, yet there were zero casualties.
